Introduction

In Hollywood, if you want to see the residences of the stars, you need to buy a map or take one of many guided tours being offered. In London, you no longer need a map or a tour guide. You can just walk through the villages of Belgravia and Knightsbridge, Kensington and Chelsea, and Soho and Mayfair and look for the eye-catching blue plaques that mark the homes of a few of London’s most popular residents.

Celebrity Homes

From the silver screen, some of Hollywood’s most influential actors have homes in London. For example, Academy award winner Al Pacino has a home in the Docklands and Tom Cruise has one in Dulwich. British singers Mick Jagger, and Ellton John as well as American performer Madonna (who is married to British director, Guy Ritchie) have homes in London too.

Queen’s flamboyant lead singer, Freddie Mercury, had a home in Knightsbridge. This was where he passed away on 24 November 1991, at age 45 due to bronchial pneumonia. To this day, his Knightsbridge home is frequented by fans from all over the world, paying their respects to this great artist.

Literary Giants

Quite a number of figures from the literary world had also held residence in London. The lively and popular area of Mayfair in London was once home to famous dramatist Oscar Wilde who spent many years of his life living in Tite Street. The Royal Borough was also once the homes of historian Hilaire Belloc, and novelist George Elliot.

Royal Residences

A trip to London is not complete unless you visit, Buckingham Palace, the home of London’s most famous resident, Queen Elizabeth II. Her Royal Family has homes all over London too. Prince Charles resides at St. James’s Palace, Princess Margaret stays at Kensington Palace, and the Queen Mother (when she was still alive), lived at Clarence House.

So when you’re in London, look out for the blue plaques. Unfortunately, not all famous residents have been properly honored with it. The homes of Sir Thomas More, Queen Elizabeth I, Isaac Newton and Queen Victoria remain unadorned until now.
