During the nineteenth century, when sails and wooden ships were slowly giving way to steam-powered steel-made ships, the cruiser evolved into powerful warship built to patrol Empire trade routes and protect merchant vessels. After the First World War, a new breed of cruisers emerged whose size was indicated by the size of their guns. This brought forth the HMS Belfast: a 6-inch cruiser designed for offensive attack, trade patrol, and support for major operations. The HMS Belfast has served through the Second World War and has played a big role in the battles of North Cape and Normandy Landing, courageously taking down enemy ships. It is best known for assisting the Allied troops to Gold and Juno beaches on the morning of D-Day in June 6, 1944. Now a museum moored at the Thames River, the HMS Belfast is a tribute to the exemplary service, countless battle stories, and accommodations of its 950 crew members that fought until her retirement from the Royal Navy in 1965. The HMS Belfast stands as the largest surviving reminder of Britain’s naval heritage and valor. Guests can tour the Quarterdeck, Bridge, the nine decks, and all the way down to the looming Boiler Room and Engine Room, followed by refreshments at the Walrus Café onboard. A tour of the HMS Belfast is an extraordinary experience and an opportunity to learn about the brave men who lived and fought for peace and freedom during the traumatic years of World War II. HMS Belfast is located at Morgan’s Lane, Tooley Street, London. It is open daily except on December 24-26.
